The Windy City: Home of Urban Blues and a good time

It’s hard to know where to start when it comes to the list of things to do in Chicago. Not only is it such and exciting and vibrant city, but it’s full to the brim of different and fun stuff you can do.

Things to do

The staples of Chicago travel are Millenium Park, Navy Pier, the Botanic Gardens and catching a game of baseball and/ or basketball.

Milennium Park (right) is a 24.5 acre park found between Randolph and Monroe Streets in the downtown area. Newly designed, this park is the city center for art, design, and architecture, a place where you can watch music performances, ice skate, eat, drink, and people watch. There are also free classical music productions by the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus.

Navy Pier, a newly refurbished recreation area which has become one of Chicago’s most visited attractions. It entertains a courtyard theater, IMAX theater, two performance stages, areas for bike riding and skating plus a convention center for the locals.

The Chicago Botanic Gardens and Buckingham Memorial Fountain are Chicago’s most visited parks and gardens, full of lagoons, acres of gardens and plant life as well as being central spots for shows, festivals and family activities. On its own, the Chicago Botanic Gardens has 23 gardens holding 1.7 million plants!

Chicago is known for its sport life and a trip here wouldn’t be complete without seeing at least one game of either Baseball of Basketball. The Chicago Cubs play out the infamous Wrigley Field (left) in baseball seasons that last from April to September, while the Chicago Bulls Basketball team play between November through to April. So at least there’s something to see almost all year round.

Money well spent

Shopping is blissful in this big city, with all major brands operating out of one central area. The array is broad from high end to more local and discount outlets, primarily out of what they call the “Magnificent Mile” which runs down Michigan Avenue. You’ll find major department store like Nordstroms, Bloomingdales, Lord and Taylor along with designer boutiques like Tiffany’s, Van Cleef and Arpels and Ralph Lauren. The Mile also has loads of malls and places to wander, indoors and outdoors.

While we’re on the topic of spending money, Chicago has over a dozen casinos for you to get glammed up and play a game or two of cards and such. Voted the best is Harrah´s Joliet Casino & Hotel, though the Hollywood Casino Aurora is worth a mention as far as games go.

Night time can also bring you a bit of fun and mischief, clubs and pubs are pretty much found all over town. Many congregate along Halsted Street, Lincoln Avenue and Clark Street on the northern side of the city. There are a few uptown, but generally all the good stuff will be found along those other streets mentioned. If it’s good music you’re after, you won’t need to look hard, Chicago is the home of urban blues so you’ll be hard pressed to avoid a good tune or two.

A quirky little mention is the Art*O*Mat machines at the Chicago Cultural Center. These mini art stores are recycled cigarette vending machines turned into original art dispensing boxes at the pull of a lever. Each pull is $5 and you’ll receive one original piece from a local artist, proceeds going to the artists, the creator and the Cultural Center.

There is only one in Chicago, though since it’s creation as an art piece itself, the idea has spread and now there are around fifty machines in ten countries, showcasing around 300 artists work. The point of the vendor was to encourage art in the public sphere and broaden exposure and consumption for local artists.

Only one thing is for sure, Chicago is big city that will need your undivided attention. Don't bother with public transport- confusion and time wasting should have nothing to do with your holiday.
