The name of the airport was taken from the U.S. Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles, who became a significant figure during the Cold War. Dulles Airport is Washington's busiest airport and the second busiest in the Baltimore/Washington area. It is one of the two United Airlines hubs in the East Coast. In 2013, the airline handled 65.2% of the scheduled air carrier passengers at Dulles Airport.
The public airport serves around 1,000 to 1,200 flights daily. The airport currently has three terminals: Main Terminal and two Midfield Terminals. The first midfield terminal features concourses A and B while the other midfield terminal contains the concourses C and D. The 5A “Express” bus is the only Metro service in Dulles and it passes by two unloading stations coming from the airport to the downtown area.
The Congress realized that there's a need for another airport at the metropolitan area of Washington after World War II ended. Therefore, they passed the Washington Airport Act of 1950, which aimed to provide the construction and operation of a new public airport in D.C.
The original plan was to build a public airport at the former site of Burke Lake Park, but that proposal failed. Instead, they decided to put up the airport in Willard on 1958, which was a site chosen by U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower. The design of the main terminal, which received many recognition for its beauty, was created by well-known architect Eero Saarinen.
The 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, formally opened the Dulles International Airport on November 17, 1962. They added “Washington” to the name of the airport in 1984. Washington Dulles International Airport had undergone several improvements and expansions through the years. The 1980s saw the opening of the midfield concourses, the 1990s started the renovation of the terminal to provide more space, and an underground tunnel was established in 2004.
