Thinking about Detroit? Lose yourself in this city

Cold, industrial and without culture? Not a chance. What most people don’t know about Detroit is that its reputation is highly misunderstood. Detroit is actually a hub of cultural excitement, filled to the brim with museums, galleries, and performance venues for some major artists. Not what you thought? Good, there’s more to one city than a young, blonde rapper and a car manufacturer, and you’ll probably be surprised at what you can find in this city.

Things to do

One of the greatest art museums in the country is in Detroit, (equipped with a cast of Rodin’s The Thinker at the front entrance, right) and is something not to miss. In the same district, the Detroit Cultural Center, you’ll find a vast amount of artistic and cultivated landmarks at your fingertips like the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, part of the Detroit public library, the Detroit Science Center and the Detroit Historical Museum.

If you’re here for the music (and you might be), obviously there’s a lot to keep you captivated during your stay, this is after all the city backdrop of Eminem’s debut film, hip hop movie, 8 Mile. But if your tastes are a little more refined, you can check out the Motown Historical Museum, since Motown was born in Detroit, or even the Detroit Symphony. Another creative mention is the Fox Theater Building with a whopping 5000 seats!

Things to see

Historically speaking, there are a couple of things you can’t leave without doing. If you don’t do these, locals will argue that you’ve never really experienced Detroit properly! Of course the first is the Henry Ford Museum (left), but even if you don’t like cars, this museum won’t bore you. It has an extensive collection of historic artifacts as you can imagine and more like legendary pieces in history that have shaped the nation. Like what you ask? Try the actual chair Abraham Lincoln was sitting in when he was shot in the theater, or the limousine JFK was riding in when he was assassinated. Impressive stuff no one should pass up the opportunity to see. The museum isn’t exactly in Detroit, but nearby Dearborn, but it’s worth the trip out there.

Detroit Rock City, a guilty pleasure done best with a cheap rental car

Also, Detroit sport is a massive part of the city’s culture, so you must see at least one game before you leave. The Comerica Park is great for a Tigers’ game and other stuff like amusement rides and a museum. Check out the Ford Field not only for a NFL game, but an institution of sport and performance.

For good food or a night out, try Greektown (for the food), and the MGM Grand Detroit Casino (for the drinks). Great food and shopping can be found at the Eastern Market, with lots of tid- bits and fresh produce. Alternatively if you’re looking for a quick tour around the town The People Mover Train will loop you around the city centre for a tiny price and you’ll get to see some great Detroit buildings and historic sites in a short space of time.

It's good to keep in mind that Detroit is able to be seen on a budget. A cheap Detroit rental car is a fantastic option if you want to navigate your own holiday without worrying about public transport costs and schedules. A rental car in Detroit also means you can get out to the more remote sights like the Henry Ford Museum at your own leisure.
