Aiken is a beautiful city located in the state of South California, being at the same time one of the largest cities in the Central Savannah River area. The history of Aiken begins in 1835, when it was named after the rail-road company founder, William Aiken. Since 1890, when Aiken had a population of slightly over 2300, the city developed a lot, and it is now home to more than 25.000 residents, according to the 2000 census.
Throughout the years, Aiken has been considered one of the wealthiest cities in the region. Now, things do not look that different either, especially since the tourism industry is started to rise. People come to Aiken because it is a historical town, which hosts many events and offers numerous leisure opportunities.
St. Mary Help of Christians Church is one of the oldest buildings of Aiken. The construction was completed in 1905, and it revealed a beautiful facility, built in a Gothic Revival architectural style. In fact, the church is actually a complex, hosting St. Claire's Chapel and St. Mary Help of Christians Church. Now, the complex is part of the National Register of Historic Places.
Whitehall is another building from Aiken listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built somewhere around the late 1920s and it was designed by Willis Irvin of Augusta. Due to the Whitehall, the architect won the gold medal at the Southern Architectural Exhibition, in 1929. On the land where the Whitehall was built there used to be a small house, which was destroyed in a fire.
The Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum was built in 1977, to honor the steeplechase horse races and the Thoroughbred horse breed. Throughout the years, many jockeys and trainers have set records here, so they were inducted on the 'Hall of Fame' list. Passionates will also get the chance to witness beautiful exhibitions displayed in the variety of galleries.
