The town was almost completely destroyed by Sherman's troops in 1864 and was flooded during the creation of Lake Allatoona by the Army Corp of engineers.  The furnace is all that remains of the Cooper iron empire. Visitors can hike the trails and go to the 
overlook atop the Dam at Lake Allatoona.
