Fort Washington is a lovely suburb of Philadelphia, located in the state of Pennsylvania, more exactly in Montgomery County. The history of this unincorporated community called Fort Washington goes back to 1728, when German immigrants came to the area. In 1946, Fort Washington was encompassed in the Township of Upper Dublin and several parts of Fort Washington were incorporated into Whitemarsh Township. Even though the population of Fort Washington reunites only 5.446 people, according to the 2010 census, this beautiful place is very developed. Clifton House is one of the oldest buildings in Fort Washington. This historical property was built somewhere around 1801 and it used to be known as the Sandy Run Inn, especially during the American Revolution. Now, Fort Washington is the headquarters of Fort Washington Historical Society and it also serves as a museum and a library. If you want to learn more about the history, culture and traditions of Fort Washington, this is the place to visit.
Fort Washington State Park is a wonderful recreational facility, which every member of the family will enjoy. The park was founded in 1953 and it spans on a total area of 493 acres. Here, you will get the chance to experience hiking, fishing, cross-country skiing, sledding and picnicking. Visitors will also get the chance to admire an impressive number of birds and wildlife species. It all depends on the season in which you are visiting the park, but there is no doubt that you will have a great time.
The Highlands is another historic property in Fort Washington. Its construction began in 1794 and was completed by 1796. The house belonged to the politician Anthony Morris. Not only that the house is beautiful, as it is built in a gorgeous Georgian style, but the gardens surrounding it are amazing, as well. The Highlands is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Great Elmwood Park: Established in 1920 this park features animals from both South and North Americas. Since the 1990's, many additions have been made to increase the park's collection of creatures, including howler monkeys, tree frogs and fruit bats.
Amazing Fonthill Museum: Primarily, this was the residence of artist Henry Mercer. The museum is built entirely of concrete having 44 rooms with fireplaces and more than 100's of windows. It also features a wide range of hand-crafted roofing tile works.
Mercer Museum: This museum was built in 1916 and has a wonderful collection of ancient American folk arts. It also features some pre-mechanized artworks such as a whaling ship, a Conestoga cart and a historic fire engine.
John James Audubon Center: Originally the home of great naturalist and artist John James Audubon it is now a nature sanctuary, with around 175 bird varieties and 500 plant varieties. The area is known as the Mill Grove Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Stoogeum – Situated in nearby Gwynedd Valley, this is the world's first and only museum dedicated to the Three Stooges comedy trio. It contains around 100,000 pieces of Stooge memorabilia from 1918 to the present day. It also has a research library and a 65-seat theater and is the home of the Three Stooges Fan Club.
