Hattiesburg, Mississippi's 4th largest city, is situated mainly in Forrest County, but also covers small areas of Lama, Forrest, and Perry Counties. It is also known as the, “The Hub City.” There is an integrated town, Petal and an unincorporated area, Oak Grove.
1. Visit The University of Southern Mississippi: This is a public university, which was originally a teacher training college known as Mississippi Normal College. Southern Mississippi has multiple educational centers, such as the Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach, Stennis Space Center, Gulf Coast Research Laboratory , Jackson County, Keesler Air Force Base, J.L. Scott Aquarium and Pontlevoy.
2. See the William Carey University: This university is associated with the Southern Baptist and the Mississippi Baptist Conventions. It was founded in 1906 as the Mississippi Woman's College and the name was changed to William Carey College in 1954, when it became co-educational.
3. Do not miss the Camp Shelby: The north gate of this military facility is located at the southern edge of Hattiesburg on US Highway 49 and is the largest state owned training site in the country. Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center covers more than 525 square kilometers and is situated in Perry and Forrest Counties.
4. See the Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport: Commonly known as Airport City, this public airport is situated almost 10 miles north of Hattiesburg and 23 miles southwest of Laurel. Airport City covers 1,170 acres and has only one runway.
5. Visit the Hattiesburg Amtrak Station: The address is 308 Newman Street in the heart of downtown Hattiesburg. The Crescent passenger train runs from the station and visitors can enjoy a train ride through the areas beautiful surroundings.
