The word Lihue means “cold chill” in the native Hawaiian language. (Lihue is located about 100 miles northwest of Honolulu.) But don't be fooled, Lihue averages high temperatures between 77 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit year-round! With lows rarely dipping below 65, most visitors won't think of “cold chill” after spending time in Lihue!

Lihue combines the beauty of Hawaii with a less-developed, calmer atmosphere than an urban center like Honolulu has. Lihue has an area of 7.1 square miles and about 6,500 permanent residents. It is one of the two major cities on Kauai – the other, larger city is Kapaa to the north. Kauai has amazing sun-soaked beaches, lots of opportunities for water sports, and natural wonders like the famous Waimea Canyon.

Lihue has the amenities of a large city, even if they are fewer and farther between. Your car rental can easily get you to Kukui Grove Shopping Center, which includes a Macy's department store. The town has popular retailers like Costco, Home Depot, K-Mart, Sears and Wal-Mart. You'll also find movie theaters and plenty of restaurants. Travelers in Lihue may also want to check out the Kauai Museum, with lots of exhibits and artifacts from the island's history.

Lihue was built around the sugar crop. In the 1930s, the largest sugar plantation was the Wilcox family's Kilohana, which has now been transformed into a famous gift shop and restaurant. Kilohana is a great place to drive your car rental, because tours of the plantation can be taken by diesel locomotives on a private railroad, or by horse-drawn carriages. Stay late and enjoy Kilohana's wonderful luaus!

Five Things You Must Do in Lihue

Lihue is the second largest town on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.  The city's history can be traced back to an ancient era when it housed the county courthouse of Kauai. The city's name translated into Hawaiian means “cold chill”. The term derives from the cold wind that often sweeps across its terrain.

1. Visit the Kauai Museum: The museum is located in a building that previously housed the location of the Kauai Public Library. The museum also houses a splendid collection of seashells, Hawaiian quilts and artifacts from a bygone era.

2. Trek to the Waimea Canyon: The Waimea Canyon is truly a dramatic sight to behold. Carved thousands of years ago by the rivers that flowed from Mount Waialeale's summit, the canyon is bathed in a changing intensity of hues as the sun reflects along the canyon's stone walls.

3. Visit the Kilhona Plantations: Gaylord Parke Wilcox, founder of Lihue Sugar Plantation owns this sprawling plantation. The rear of the plantation features a quaint restaurant where you can enjoy delicacies on the balcony enjoying the views of the mountains.

4. Sea Arch at Marriott: Sea arches are a common feature seen throughout the Hawaiian Islands. This one in Kalapaki Beach stands out from the rest due to its unnaturally large size. Sea arches are formed when the molten lava meets the cold ocean waters and cools rapidly.

5. Wailua Waterfall:  This 80 tiered waterfall was made famous when it was featured in the hit television series, Fantasy Island .The best time to visit the place is early morning when the sun renders it with a crystal-like glitter as it cascades down the rocks. Brave visitors can trek the slippery rocks and descend to the bottom to take a dip in the small pool that the falls create.
