Lockport is a lovely city in the United States, located more exactly within the state of Illinois, in Will County, just 30 miles away from Chicago. The history of Lockport goes back to 1853, when it became incorporated. Lockport has known a rapid growth ever since, especially due to its close proximity to Chicago. According to the 2005 census, Lockport has a total population of 22,161 residents and spans on a total area of 7.1 square miles (18 sq km), becoming one of the fastest growing communities in the state of Illinois.
The Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery is a great cultural institution in Lockport, being actually a branch of the State Museum in Chicago. The museum puts on display numerous interesting collections, featuring mostly artwork by local and regional artists. Other museums in Lockport you could visit include Gladys Fox Museum, Will County Historical Society, and I & M Canal Museum.
The Gaylord Building Historical Site is another great cultural and historic place in Lockport. The building dates back to 1893, having played an important role in one of the 19th century's greatest enterprises: the Illinois & Michigan Canal. Currently, the building features numerous exhibits that will teach visitors more about the local culture and history. You will also find here a restaurant.
Statesville Haunted Prison is a mysterious site in Lockport where you will surely have lots of fun. Once you enter the prison, you will feel like you are in a maze, trying to find your way through 23 maximum security cells and come eye to eye with more than 100 prisoners.
