Oak Ridge is a beautiful city in the state of Tennessee, United States, located more exactly in Anderson and Roane counties. The history of Oak Ridge goes back to 1942, when the city was established as a production site for the Manhattan Project. Later on, Oak Ridge became incorporated in 1959 and has started to develop rapidly. The total population of Oak Ridge is of about 27.387 people, according to the 2000 census, making it an important part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Area. Oak Ridge spans on a total area of 89.9 square miles (232.9 sq km). Nowadays, Oak Ridge is a major cultural and economical center of the region, as well as a wonderful place to visit.
The Oak Ridge Civic Center is a great facility in the core of the nature. Here, you will be able to admire The Oak Ridge Commemorative Walk and the International Friendship Bell, also known as the Peace Bell. The park has also got many pathways and benches, for you to relax and admire the beautiful scenery.
The American Museum of Science and Energy is a spectacular cultural institution, established in 1949 and dedicated to science, energy and nuclear power. Both children and adults will have the chance to learn many interesting facts and to document the role of Oak Ridge in the Manhattan Project. You will see a wide variety of exhibits here, including robots, a timeline of atomic discoveries, science puzzles, a NOAA weather station and a Van de Graaff generator.
Children's Museum of Oak Ridge is a non-profit organization opened in 1973, with the purpose of educating children about the history, culture and heritage of the city. There are numerous museum exhibits and educational programs here, which combine learning with interactive activities specially designed for children.
The George Jones Memorial Baptist Church, locally known as the 'Wheat Church', is one of the oldest churches in Oak Ridge, built in 1901 by the former Wheat community. The building is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so it is a must see.
