Oxford became a center of culture due to the location of the University of Mississippi, which was founded in 1848 as the first rank college of the state. The Lyric Oxford is a theater that was originally a livery stable owned by William Faulkner's family in the early part of the 20th century. During the 1920s it was converted into a theater for live performances and silent films and named the Lyric Theater. The Grove, Ole Miss is the legendary tailgating area located at the center of Oxford. It is approximately 10 acres in size and is shaded by oak, elm and magnolia trees, hence the grove part of the name. The festivities at the Grove include a dress up party, where men wear slacks, button-up shirts, ties, loafers and coats while women wear cocktail dresses or brightly colored sundresses and high heel shoes.
