Philadelphia Municipal Airport was renamed to Philadelphia International Airport in 1945 and that year, American Overseas Airlines started to offer direct flights to Europe. During the early years of operation, the airport has undergone several developments and changes. The airport had runways 4, 9, 12, and 17 between 1947 and 1950. Expansions were made on runway 9 in 1956. Runway 12 closed in 1959 as well as runway 4 in the early 1970s. 

The dominant carrier of PHL was the US Airways during the 1980s and 1990s. The airline started to shift most of its operations from Pittsburgh to the Philadelphia International Airport in 2003.
