Skillman was named in honor of the Skillman family, a Dutch family that came in America from England, in 1664. In 1729, Thomas Skillman bought 500 acres of land near Millstone River and settled in the area. When the railroads were built in the 1870s, another Skillman gave help to officials and in their honor was named a train station. Around it was opened a general store, a hardware store and a post office. Basically, the whole town developed around that train station. That is why, in our time, this area is named Skillman.
