Sutton is a small, charming city located in West Virginia, with a population of 1011 residents, according to the 2000 census. Sutton was settled in 1792 by Adam o' Brien. In the past, Sutton was a transportation hub, thanks to the existence of Elk River. Due to its location, Sutton was embroiled in the American Civil War. After the war, Sutton was destroyed, then it was slowly rebuilt but remained small until the local timber industry bloomed. The town became a commercial centre, and many of the banks, hotels, shops and other historic buildings in the Sutton Downtown Historic District date from this 1890-1920 period.
