With a population of almost 10,000 residents and an area of 9.2 square miles, the city of Thomaston is the county seat of Upson County. Thomaston is situated in an area that also encompasses Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Gainesville and Georgia. The city was incorporated on June 11, 1825 and it was named county seat on the same date. It was named in honor of General Jett Thomas, an Indian who fought in the War of 1812.
