Generally, those with a license that is not printed fully in English will also need an International Driving Permit. However, the rules are different in each state. Those with driving licenses issued in Canada, the UK, Australia or New Zealand generally do not require an International Driving Permit to drive in the United States.
Please note that if you do require an International Driving Permit to travel in the US, you will still need to present your original driving license when you pick up your rental car. The International Driving Permit serves as a translation only, and will not be accepted if it is not accompanied by your license.
If you are a foreign visitor to the United States, you cannot be issued an International Driving Permit from the US. You will need to apply for your permit from your county of residence.
